![]() The most notable critique is structuralism and its further development into post-structuralism, which is founded on semiotics and concerned with charting the construction of meaning (of experience and reality) by structures of power. ![]() Everything that follows it is its elaboration, further application, and/or criticism. Phenomenology is a founding school of contemporary Continental philosophy. ![]() This suspension of bias, called the epoché, reveals our relation with the world to be more reciprocal than we regularly presume, letting us see, more clearly, what is essential within this interaction and its dynamism. Phenomenology’s coda, that the world gives itself to us as we give ourselves to the world, locates the creation of meaning in this communal giving and indicates a mode of experience wherein our presumptions of having an egoistic supremacy over an essentially independent world (in which we are its sole interpreter and judge of its value) are unsettled. It is founded upon the premise that one can reliably capture and describe how an abstracted event, like an encounter with the unexpected, gives one pause and permits a flood of visions, each an aspect of experience commonly overlooked. Phenomenology-as developed by Edmond Husserl and furthered by his student Martin Heidegger-is primarily an epistemological method envisioned applicable to diverse areas of life and theoretical study.
